A Visit to the Rungis international market: At the heart of Europe’s food supply chain

Bold flavors, refined texture, unforgettable character.

On March 20, 2026, on the occasion of the International Day of La Francophonie, Step By Steppe visited the Marché International de Rungis, a key hub in Europe’s food supply chain.

Located just 7 km from Paris and inaugurated in 1969, Rungis is the largest wholesale fresh food market in the world, spanning over 234 hectares.

Key figures:
Over 1,200 companies
Around 13,000 employees
Nearly 3 million tonnes of products annually
Products sourced from more than 100 countries

Classified as a Market of National Interest (MIN), it plays a strategic role in food supply, with high standards in quality, food safety, and traceability, under the management of SEMMARIS.

The visit included:
The meat sector
The gastronomy sector with Medelys
Dairy, fruit and vegetable sectors
The flower market

Beyond France, Rungis represents a strategic gateway for international producers, particularly from Central Asia and Mongolia:

·      Access to European markets
·      Promotion of authentic products
·      Upgrading through European standards
·      Partnership opportunities

We warmly thank SEMMARIS and Stéphane Layani for their welcome.
