Mongolia Accelerates Its Green Energy Transition
The 3×100 Initiative is a Mongolian national initiative aimed at reducing the country’s dependence on energy and petroleum imports while developing a decentralized green infrastructure through three flagship programs:
• 100,000 Solar Homes: enabling households to become electricity producers through rooftop solar systems (up to 10 kW), supported by simplified grid-connection procedures.
• 100 MW of decentralized renewable energy to strengthen local energy autonomy and reduce losses from an aging transmission network.
• 100 electric vehicle charging hubs, strategically located along tourism routes, trade corridors, mining export roads, and border crossings.
With only around 1,000 electric vehicles out of 918,000 nationwide, Mongolia aims to reach 100,000 EVs, contributing to cleaner air, lower fuel dependency, and job creation.
Strong momentum, significant challenges
• High reliance on fossil fuels and energy imports
• Aging power grids with high transmission losses
• Renewables currently represent only 7% of the energy mix
•
International partnerships at the core
The initiative emphasizes green financing, international monitoring and reporting standards, and workforce development.
In this context, European expertise is explicitly invited to Mongolia, including technology solutions, engineering, regulatory frameworks, training, and sustainable financing models.
Supported by the private sector and international organizations such as UNDP, this comprehensive approach could become a game changer for Mongolia’s renewable energy sector if effectively implemented.
